The Philosophy of our Program:
  • The Spencer Hockey Academy is a healthy athletic and academic environment where students can participate in a sport that they are passionate about. The program will enhance their enjoyment of education, thereby increasing chances for post secondary opportunities.

The Primary Goals of the Hockey Academy are:
  • To promote superior athletic habits and teach the values and ethics of being an athlete and student
  • Increase and maintain student enjoyment of education
  • To develop body co-ordination, motor skill, and cognitive skills
  • To develop individual skill and knowledge about hockey
  • To develop health and nutritional awareness

A Regular Week:
  • A grade 8 program and a grade 9 program.
  • Each program will:
    • have three on ice practices a week
    • have two lessons in the classroom a week
    • one off ice training session a week
    • This schedule will remain the same until late April when the ice at JDF Parks and Recreation is taken out

Schedule for May and June
  • The blocks will remain the same for May/June however the activities will change.
  • Each grade will:
    • once a week take part in “cross training activities” off campus
    • Participate in 3+ hours of off-ice training a week at the school
    • 2 hours of classroom- Sports and Academic Theory
    • 1+ hour(s) of study skills and group learning through AVID®

The Tangibles
  • Students will be driven to and from the rink via Sooke District bus service
  • There will be storage for the players hockey gear at the school
  • All ice times are at Bear Mountain Arena
  • There will be a separate girls changing room and two boys dressing rooms.

Working with Hockey Canada
  • We are an official Hockey Canada Skills Academy (HCSA)
  • Hockey Canada will contribute the following services to our program:
    • HCSA off ice development training curriculum guide
    • HCSA Operations Manual for On ice instruction
    • Member of Hockey Canada’s coaches club (online program)

Program Fees
  • Program fees for the year will be $1000.00 per player
  • A payment program of $150.00 a month for 6 months beginning in September 2005 has been developed
  • If you wish to pay full fees in June or September, that would be very much appreciated
  • You can, upon request, receive a receipt for your payment from the secretaries in the Spencer School office

Sport and Academic Theory Class
  • Will be conducted in a standard classroom setting
  • Some of the course components will include:
    • Health and Nutrition
    • Sport Psychology
    • Study Skills ( Through AVID ®)
    • Special Guest Speakers
    • Hockey Strategies: individual concepts, team concepts, technical skills, tactical skills

Off Ice Training Program
  • During the Months of Sept. to April:
    • Hockey Specific off ice training
    • Students will be using Stride Slides ®
      which will improve
      each players skating,
      stickhandling, and
      shooting

Off Ice Training Program
  • During the Months of May and June:
  • Student will spend two days a week involved in “rigourous” dryland training
  • 1 day of training using Stride Slides ®
  • 1 day of off campus activities (cross training)
  • They will undergo fitness testing the beginning of May and then at the end of June

Avid ®
  • Avid is a new program that helps students:
    • To better write, listen, speak, question, take notes, study, organize time, and work with others
    • I am a trained Avid teacher and will spend time with each program teaching some of the Avid® strategies as part of their SAT class.

On Ice Instruction
  • The focus for the On Ice Instruction will be based on skill development and will have an emphasis on:
      • Skating
      • Passing
      • Shooting
      • Stickhandling
      • Offensive and defensive tactics

On Ice Instruction con’t

  • Players will undergo on ice testing to evaluate their skills (three times over the course of the year).
  • The players will then be grouped in colors based on their stage of skill development.
  • With the exception of 1 or 2 warm up and skating drills to begin and end practice, the ice will most commonly be broken up into either 3 or 6 stations.

On Ice Instruction con’t
  • I will be supported with a minimum of one other instructor each practice
    • The other instructors involved will be experienced local area Junior A and Junior B coaches
    • We will also be assisted by current Victoria Cougars and Victoria Salsa players volunteering on the ice

Assessment and Evaluation
  • Each student’s hockey skills will be evaluated at the beginning of the program. They will identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses in regards to hockey skills.
  • From this evaluation we will develop a learning plan for each student which will be identified to them.
  • Students are evaluated each term in the areas of on-ice, off-ice and for their work in the classroom. A report is included in each student’s report card each term.

Equipment and Supplies
  • All students in the hockey program will be required to have:
      • Full Hockey Canada approved hockey gear
      • Sticks for on the ice and off ice
      • P.E strip each Friday (including hockey gloves and proper runners)
      • Regular school supplies (including a three inch binder)

Sponsorship
  • We have received some Sponsorship funds from local businesses such as Bear Mountain
  • We are still accepting sponsorship from local businesses
  • As compensation we offer:
    • Logo’s display on web site and/or Jerseys
    • Name on Appreciation Plaque located in the front exit of Spencer Middle School

Parent Involvement
  • We are looking for parents to help with:
  • The three on ice testing dates-
      • Involves assisting with timing players (stop watches involved, should be wearing skates)
      • Recording information (using a clipboard- does not involve having to put on skates)
  • Parent Planning Committee
      • Plan and organize special events
      • Organize guest visits and speakers
      • Help plan and support field trips
      • Help with Sponsorship and Fundraising
  • Female parent to attend practices
